About the Occidental Tamarindo
Formerly known as “Barcelo Playa Langosta”, the hotel changed its name and brand in 2017 as part of its recent renovation. The hotel belongs to the Spanish chain Barceló and has 198 rooms. The property has direct access to one of the most beautiful beaches in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
The 5 star hotel can boast one of the few -or probably the only one- in the area offering All Inclusive Resort accommodations (at least in the are of Tamarindo, Guanacaste). The Occidental is located on the immaculate Playa Langosta, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The beach is partially protected as it is sorrounded by the Las Baulas National Marine Park in Costa Rica.
Although the hotel was renamed “Occidental Tamarindo”, it is worth noting that the hotel is not actually located in Playa Tamarindo but Playa Langosta. Langosta beach is just two kilometers away from downtown Tamarindo, which takes about two minutes by car.
Note that Playa Langosta has nothing to envy Tamarindo, in fact it can Langosta is one of the most charming beaches across Guanacaste and Costa Rica. Having the chance of staying at an All Inclusive Resort next to a National Park is not common in Costa Rica, given the environmental restrictions.
The Occidental Tamarindo is next to a spectacular freshwater river which flows into Playa Langosta. The river has an area suitable for bathing and swimming. The hotel beach has clear sands and about 2 kilometers of extension with warm and crystalline waters. The beach sorrounding the Occidental Hotel are the nesting place of the sea turtles (including the giant Leatherback Turtle), from which the national park takes its name.
The Occidental Tamarindo is one of the top destinations for national surfers. Playa Langosta is very popular for surfers throughout the year in Costa Rica due to its consistent waves year-round. In fact, a good day the waves here can challenge the most experienced surfers.
The Playa Langosta area does not have much any shopping and/or eating places except for a pizza place and a small cafe. The Occidental Tamarindo (former Barceló Langosta) has its own souvenir and photography shop. For those who want to shop (or go out to eat outside the hotel) you can walk from the Occidental Tamarindo to Tamarindo town along a semi-paved street and about 2 kilometers. The most convenient alternative is to take a taxi from the hotel door to the town for about $ 5. At time of this writing road to Occidental in Langosta is partially paved, expecting to complete work within a year.
The Tamarindo Airport (TNO) is only 15 minutes away from the Occidental Tamarindo Hotel, while the Liberia Airport (LIB) is one hour away from the hotel. For those who arrive at the Santamaria Intl Airport in San Jose, the total travel time to the hotel will be about 4 to 4 and half hours. The hotel can offer a shuttle from the Airport upon request, for groups larger than 14 guests the Occidental offers an official host to meet the group.
For nature lovers the surroundings of the Occidental Tamarindo hotel are truly exceptional. Visitors to the hotel can see the spectacular mangroves inside Langosta Beach estuary and its great ecosystem. In addition to that, and if traveller is lucky, it is possible to see nesting turtles at night or day time, also great variety of birds – and perhaps the most spectacular – you can see the migration of several species of whales in the distance. The Occidental Tamarindo hotel staff (ex Barceló) will be able to guide you with additional information about this region’s natural wonders.
Occidental Tamarindo currently offers 198 rooms completely renovated in 2010. The common areas of the hotel were also recently revamped. The hotel offers free WIFI across all the facilities, as well as two nice restaurants, a snack bar and a bar in the hotel lobby. For the most active travellers, the Occidental Tamarindo offers a tennis court open to guests, table tennis, darts game, and an improvised sand volleyball court on the sands of the beach. Some activities coordinated by the hotel are also offered. You can also rent a kayak and paddle your way along the mangroves of Playa Langosta estuary.
Perhaps the most memorable tour for the Occidental Tamarindo guests will be a horse ride through the beaches of the region. Note that horse rides are organized by the hotel but by experienced local guides. Horse riding in Costa Rica is a unique experience for the traveler, it will allow you explore the exhuberant beaches of Costa Rica at the gallop of a horse enjoying the most beautiful sunsets.
